What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

When a transponder gets interrogated it sends out a signal encoded with the four-digit code. This signal is known as the SQUAWK code and forms the basis for aircraft identification on radar screens. It can also be used to send a specific message to air traffic control in the situation of an emergency, or to alert air traffic controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes are often utilized to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to communicate via radio. They are crucial for safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar probes with an identifier code. This allows ATC to locate the aircraft on a radar screen that is busy. Transponders can be set to respond in various ways when questioned. Mode A transmits only the code while mode C transmits data on altitude. Mode S transponders give more specific information including call signs and position which are useful in airspace that is congested.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique for every vehicle on the planet with the exception of alien cars (or whatever). The 17 digits of the VIN code are a combination numbers and letters that can be decoded to reveal crucial information about your vehicle or truck.

The last six digits of the VIN code are a sequential serial number that uniquely identifies the car or truck. The final digit of the VIN code is also known as the check-digit. The remaining numbers have been transliterated into numbers. The first digit is assigned an 8 and each subsequent number increases in value by one until the seventh digit reaches nine, which is then two. Then the entire VIN will be translated back to its original form, by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is similar to the check digit, then the VIN is valid.

Data Transfer
